NZ White Faced Heron
This painting was inspired by the Talented Paula at gapt.it photography and her photo
White faced Heron or Matuko are a self introduced species to New Zealand and considered a native species although they did not reach our shores until the 1940’s.
These guys are a little different because they roost in trees, their preferred being Macrocarpa and during breeding season they will make essentially a tree fort where they will raise their young.
They are the most common of the 4 types of Heron that can be found in New Zealand.
